Got
word from the city that they will arrange with Waste Management to
provide garbage boxes. However, we will need volunteers to put
them out and pick them up afterwards. I'm wondering if there may
be a church, school, etc group that we could have help with this.
Any suggestions?

look into. Can someone please volunteer to do this?

Hi Christine,
Just had a
thought regarding Discover Milan Day. Are you getting any large
cardboard boxes for garbage? Last year we didn’t and the
garbage containers downtown were overflowing and we had no way to empty
them. Waste Management empties them on Tuesdays so the garbage
had to set for several days. (I think Georgia Pacific may have
donated boxes for other activities)

Hello
Everyone,
Just a note
to let you know that I’ll not be able to make the meeting on the
15th the MAHS is showing the “Milan Movie” at
7pm at the SeniorCenter.
There is vintage footage of the dredging of FordLake,
building the dam and bridge, and the 1965 tornado damage in addition to
other great segments.

I made an error on my
previous e-mail, the City Council Meeting is on April 13th. Let's
plans to meet on Wednesday, April 15th at 6:30pm at Roy's. I
would like to have flyers ready at this meeting for volunteers to
distribute.
Rod Hill-
is this feasible for you. I am assuming that you can have the
flyers designed and have all of the info on them and then just make any
changes as needed per councils decision, e-mail them to me by the end
of the day on Tuesday, April 14th so that I can have them printed for
the meeting on the 13th. I will have an updated event list for
you today or tomorrow for insertion on the flyer.

Hello
Everyone,
First of
all I want to thank everyone for all of the work you
have put in so far. It is really great to see so many people
pulling together to make this event happen. It says a lot about
the people of Milan! Below is the updated list of events.
Please let me know if I have missed anything or if you know of anything
else that is happening that day. A question came up at the
meeting last night regarding other events that are going on that
day. If a group or organization is hosting an event that day at
their own site they do not have to contact us to be a part of the
planning. However, I would encourage them to get in touch as this
will get them included in all of the advertising that we are doing to
the day. Please remember the March 15th deadline for all event
entries. Once we get council approval at the April City Council
Meeting we will begin our advertising.
We still
need a volunteer to help out with the Tolan St
events. This is really an easy job you just need to be available
to the groups who are performing on Tolan St in case they need
anything. We also have a caterer setting up on Tolan St who will
be cooking up some delicious BBQ all day so what better place to hang
out!
Thanks
again for all of your hard work!

Volunteers
to contact downtown businesses again-have gotten no response thus far
Posted 03/06/2009: Based on the
responses that I got it looks like Monday will be our best day to meet
next week. So the meeting will be Monday, March 9th at 7pm at
Roy's.
I'd like to
set up a meeting for sometime next week, the week of March 9th.
There is a chamber event on Thursday evening so that is out. What
days are best for everyone? I'll schedule the meeting based on
the day that the most people can attend.
Sorry about having to
cancel the meeting last week. I am feeling much better but trying
to catch up on work this week. I just want to remind everyone
that March 15th is the deadline for all groups that want to be involved
so that we can get approval from the city. Anyone who approaches
us after March 15th will not be able to participate that day.
I still need a volunteer to
head up the Tolan St events. It is really a simple job you just
need to hang out on Tolan St and make sure that the scheduled groups
are there and have what they need. If no one volunteers for this
task there will be no events on Tolan St.
I'm not sure but someone besides Sally and myself are passing out
flyers for the vendor tables. I got a call today from a
lady who got one on her table while she is at an UAW event.
So other then the original list I sent out I am now not sure of how
many vendors have been approached. Can we close this loop please?

Note:
We are still having trouble with sending rapidware.com email to

it’s back again. We are relocating to new high-security private

few days before the transition. So best to check the Web site every day

Hello
Everyone,
I am going to cancel the
meeting that we have scheduled for tomorrow night. I have
bronchitus so am a bit out of commission. I think we can do what
we need via e-mail. What I really need is just an update as to if
anyone has talked to anyone new about being involved, any of the
tenative events that we have have been confirmed, status on Main St
vendors.
Just
wanted to keep in touch about the progress (or lack of) that
I've made on calling those businesses you sent me. I'm not
getting too much interest.
This
is what I have so far..Alan Hale, Diamond Setters, and China
One don't do anything. I'm waiting for most everybody to call me
back because they don't know. Best Images doesn't promote
walk-ins but is willing to lend his outdoor space and he has tables and
chairs. I still have a few more to call and will do that within
the next week, but the ones that are highlighted on the list don't
sound too interested.
Just
want you to know what I've been doing. I'm leaving on
vacation in a week's time, but will contact you once more before I
leave.

----------------------------
I have received some
e-mails and phone calls regarding the previous e-mail that I sent
regarding costs of Discover Milan Day and want to clarify. The
city is behind us 100% and are not requiring us to
pay these costs however, as we all know the city budget is really tight
so any help that we can give will be appreciated. As I have said
from the start with this event, these are tough times for everyone and
this is a community event and will take the community to make it
happen. I have been in close contact with Mayor Muckler and
she is working very hard to assist in any way that she and the city can
to see that this event is a success.
In other news I am happy to
report that several of the people that participated in the craft show
last year want to come as street vendors this year so it sounds like we
will have a good turnout.
I am in meetings
the rest of today but will be available most of the day tomorrow
if you have questions.
I need a
volunteer to coordinate and oversee the events on Tolan St. Ben
Swayze will help us out with the sound system and chairs for the New
Horizons Band. Milan Tae Kwon Do will be performing as
well. Usually the dance studio participates but I have not heard
from them.

I'm glad that Norma has
brought this up because I have noticed in the e-mails that there is
some confusion on Norma's role in this event. This is not a
chamber event but a community event so Norma's involvement is only what
she would like it to be just as all of the other volunteers. I
added Norma to the e-mail list just for informational purposes because

those meetings as I'm tied up every night with being at the nursing

get home and make dinner, I'm whipped and I usually still have chamber
work to complete for the day. I can't be on the committee, but if

Hi Jennifer,
I will not be able to stop in today, so I'll take
your advice and discuss this via e-mail. You stated gas, and the driver
had to be compensated, Lets say we wanted the bus for 3 hours, what
would the cost be?
Would it possible that the driver would donate his
time for the community event?
The fuel, we could figure how much it would
cost to make a trip from the Old fire Barn to the hack house we might
be able to make the money in ticket sales for the rides.
Another thought which might work is a garage sale
bus schedule or tour the baseball field, or the thoughts are only
limited by our imagination.
When I worked for the transit, I had a vision to be
able to provide a service such as this, maybe now is the time with your
leadership.
I have included this in the Discover
Milan message chain that has been created by RapidWare for
all interested and involved parties to view. Maybe someone out
there has more to contrubute.
Thanks for your time and I'll be looking forward to
your reply

Plans are picking up steam for Discover Milan
May 2nd is looking like the most exciting Discover Milan event
we’ve ever had. The Milan city center will be hopping, from
Downtown to Wilson Park, with activities planned by just about every
community group in town. The day will begin with the big Opening Day
Youth League parade. This is the traditional start of the Milan
baseball season and all the kid’s teams will march from Main St.
to the baseball diamonds on Neckle Ct. Get ready for a whole
day’s schedule of exciting games. But that’s just the
beginning.
Community volunteers met on Wednesday night at Roy’s BBQ to
coordinate all the activities. So far, events are being contributed
from the Milan Area Art Association, the Garden Club, the Milan Rotary,
Friends of the Milan Library, the Backstreet Cruisers, the Historical
Society, the Milan Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Development
Authority, the Youth League and a new group, the Milan Gustatory
Society, to name just a few. Each group is planning their own
activities and the group has been meeting at Roy’s to coordinate
this citywide event.
As it stands, there will be plenty of things to do on Saturday. Between
innings, you can visit downtown shopping, the traditional pancake
breakfast, artists and crafters show, the Second Annual Ford Lake
Rubber Duck Race, the Friends book sale, and the antique tractor show
on the rise by the river. Some new events are the MAHS Hack House open
house and their garden theater presentation of the Great Electric Sugar
Scandal. In the afternoon you can get a taste of old Milano with the
First Annual Italian Pasta Smack Down where local professionals
challenge each others cooking skills and you get to be the judge!
Where to go, how to get there and how on earth can we get this all set
up in time are being worked on to make Discovering Milan more fun than
ever. More volunteers are always welcome and the next meeting will be
at Roy’s downtown on Wednesday February 11th at 7 p.m. Come join
the fun!
